Bucks County man sentenced to state prison term for DUI, drug and theft counts

A Bucks County man was sentenced to a state prison term on Thursday after previously pleading guilty in five pending criminal cases.

William Michell, 40, of Bristol, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve a total of two to seven years in a state correctional institution followed by three years of probation.

The sentence was imposed on charges of two counts of driving under the influence of a controlled substance and one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and retail theft.

He was arrested on the DUI charges on March 1, 2021, by state police at Lehighton; and on Dec. 13, 2020, also by state police at Lehighton.

He was charged with the possession of a controlled substance count on Feb. 3, 2021, and possession of drug paraphernalia on Aug. 1, 2020, both filed by Lansford police. The retail theft occurred on July 8, 2021, at Lowe’s in Mahoning Township.

Nanovic rejected a request to sentence Michell to a county prison term. Nanovic said he could not ignore Michell’s extensive prior criminal record.

Michell admitted to a long-term drug addiction problem and said he had gone through an inpatient program several years ago, but relapsed.

Nanovic imposed the following terms: first DUI, one to five years, a fine of $1,500 and 18-month license suspension; second DUI, two to seven years, a fine of $2,500 another 18-month license suspension; possession of a controlled substance, six months to three years; possession of drug paraphernalia, three to 12 months; and retail theft, one to three years. All terms run concurrently. He was also ordered to make restitution of $768 to Lowe’s, supply a DNA sample and pay court costs of over $1,000.

Michell has been an inmate in the county prison on the charges and was given credit for 164 days served.
