Gilbert woman sentenced to prison term for DUI

A Gilbert woman was sentenced to a prison term in Carbon County court on Thursday on driving under the influence and driving under suspension - DUI related charges.

Laura Santangelo, 33, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve 90 days to five years in the county prison on the DUI count. On the suspension charge she was fined $1,000. She previously entered guilty pleas to the charges.

Nanovic rejected her request for house arrest. He noted that the adult probation office said she qualified for the program but recommended she not be placed due to prior arrests.

She arrested on April 27, 2021, by state police at Lehighton. At the time of the arrest she had her 4-year-old daughter in the vehicle. She refused a test.

In a plea deal with the district attorney’s office a charge of endangering the welfare of a child was dropped.

Nanovic also imposed a fine of $1,500, license suspension of 18 months, ordered her to supply a DNA sample and render 100 hours of community service when paroled.

Nanovic said he would let her serve the prison time on consecutive weekends so she can keep her employment and care for her daughter, who is now 5. She will begin the jail term at 8 p.m. on Sept. 2 and serve three days at a time. She must also pay court costs of over $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee.
