Towamensing man donates West End dog park installation

Palmerton wanted a dog park but sought the resources necessary to make it a reality.

Along came Chris Lipfert of Towamensing Township, who gave freely of his time and put a dog park up at the West End Recreation Association.

Lipfert, who has owned Lipfert Lawn & Fence in Lehighton since 2001, explained why he decided to put the dog park up for free at the field located along Alley J above portions of the 800 and 900 blocks of Edgemont Avenue.

“I’ve had the privilege of being in the business for 21 years, and meeting and working with a lot of great people giving their time to a lot of great projects,” Lipfert said. “I was really inspired by what others did.”

Lipfert installed new fencing to create two sections, one for small dogs and the other for large dogs.

He noted there was an existing dog park about a block-and-a-half away that had a 350-foot fence which he disassembled and repurposed.

Lipfert then took that fence and installed a chain-link fence and posts to complete the job. The end result is a 500-foot fence.

“I had four to five days (over the course of a week) into it, along with a little bit of sweat,” he said. “The most valuable thing we have is time.”

Lipfert said it’s all about “random acts of kindness.”

“Just the little things,” he said. “The world would be a better place if we would look at things a little differently.”

Lipfert said there was a quote he heard some time ago that has stuck with him.

“With money, you can buy a clock, but you can’t buy time,” he said. “Money comes and goes, but time doesn’t come back.”

Borough Manager Donna McGarry said there will be additional items that need to be taken care of.

She said the borough has purchased two receptacles for dog feces, and needs to get signs there with regulations.

McGarry added that eventually they hope for installation of agility-type equipment.

“These are items that we may seek grants or private funding for,” McGarry said. “It was a wonderful gesture on Mr. Lipfert’s part.”

Palmerton Borough Council in April agreed to repurpose the West End Recreation Association Field for use as a dog park.

There is no official name for the park.

Lipfert said he started the project on July 18, and finished it up on July 25.

“It was just one of those things that is something we don’t have an abundance of,” he said. “I just think it’s a great idea; I love dogs, and I hope everyone gets use out of it.”
