Catasauqua man charged in 2021 Lehigh Twp. crash

Lehigh Township police have charged Tanner Shelanick, 23, of Catasauqua, in connection with a two-vehicle crash around 10:22 p.m. Nov. 25, 2021, on Route 145 in the township.

The charges were filed in the office of Magisterial District Judge Robert A. Hawke of Walnutport. They include: aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence; aggravated assault by vehicle; driving under the influence; DUI with a high rate of alcohol; reckless driving; careless driving; failure to keep right; and failure to use a seat belt.

In an affidavit of probable cause, officer Jonathan Roth said he responded to the crash on the above date when there was a reported ejection and entrapment, observing a Ford F-150 overturned behind a tree and a Toyota minivan with a woman trapped inside it. The officer said he was told by Shelanick he swerved the pickup to avoid striking a fox or raccoon in the roadway and crossed the road, striking the Toyota.

Police said Shelanick’s voice was slurred and they could smell alcohol in the vehicle. A blood-alcohol reading was later determined to be 0.20.

Police said an accident reconstruction report showed Shelanick’s vehicle was traveling northbound at 68 mph when it crossed over into the southbound lane and struck the minivan driven by Jennifer Gomez-Marrero. The woman was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, where she underwent trauma surgery for serious fractures and intestinal injuries.
