Woman arrested after breaking into Tamaqua man’s home

A woman with no known address attempted to break into a Tamaqua man’s house where she stole bug repellant punk “sticks” during the early morning hours of July 20, Tamaqua police said.

Joan Belford-Blevans, 37, was also captured on another man’s home surveillance video that morning as she opened a gate and urinated on his lawn.

When officers caught up with her, Belford-Blevans resisted arrest and had to be subdued with a Taser.

She was taken into custody, arraigned by Tamaqua Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer and committed to the Schuylkill County Prison on $10,000 bail.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the 400 block of West Elm Street at 4 a.m. for a report of a “large framed” female wearing a dress and attempting to break into a home. The homeowner watched the woman - later identified as Belford-Blevans - on his home security system as she tried to open both his front and back doors.

She stole bug repellant punks and walked to Lehigh Street, police said.

Officers located Belford-Blevans and attempted to place her in handcuffs. She resisted arrest and began to run away. She was eventually subdued by the Taser and taken into custody.

Police received a report from a North Lehigh Street man who had video footage of Belford-Blevans entering his yard that morning and urinating there.

She was charged with two counts each of criminal trespass to enter structure and loitering and prowling at night; one count each of resisting arrest, theft by unlawful taking; and persistent disorderly conduct.
