Despite the heat, Lehighton hosts Christmas in July

“Oh, the weather outside is frightful!” So goes the start of a beloved Christmas song, fitting for the “Christmas in July” celebration held in Lehighton’s lower park.

A weekend of 90-plus degrees did not stop the people from enjoying the day, with a little spray of water from Lehighton’s iconic fountain to help keep things cool.

The Lehighton Downtown Partnership hosted the event that featured the weekly Downtown Farmers Market and Downtown Lehighton Merchants all getting into the spirit of the event. The Lehighton Memorial Library held a basket auction and local musician David Matsinko entertained with American folk music. Vendor tents filled the park with all kinds of foods, baked goods, crafts, gifts, and so much more. Several local winery/distilleries had displays of their beverages. The Blended Bakery on South First Street joined the fun by baking Christmas cookies.

The Lehighton Downtown Partnership has been active in promoting downtown Lehighton and hosting events to bring people to patronize the many local businesses in the area. The weekly Downtown Farmers Market was one of their first projects, now in its seventh year.

Each year, the farmers market expands to include more vendors. This year they added theme weekends; Mary Poppins on June 11, “Follow the Force” on July 9.

The next theme weekend will be “Spellbinding Saturday” on Aug. 13 that will include the Downtown Farmers Market, Potion Making 101, an Enchanted Scavenger Hunt, a movie in the park, and more.
