Softball benefit game set in Franklin Township

It’s an exciting brand of ball made all the better by the participants who wear their emotions on their sleeves.

The seventh Annual Franklin Township Girls Old Timers Game will be held at 1 p.m. July 30 at Christman Ball Field in Franklin Township. The rain date is July 31.

The day will include an entertaining softball game as well as a basket raffle, bake sale, 50/50 drawing and homemade food.

Don Rehrig, event co-organizer, said the game is open to any girl 18 or older or coach who has previously played for the Franklin Township Softball Association.

“Without the girls, there would be no game,” Rehrig said. “The fans are there to encourage us.”

Rehrig said it’s important for people to come out and support the Athletic Association.

“This year’s game will be played to benefit the Franklin Township Athletic Association’s concession stand,” Rehrig said. “All proceeds of the event will go to assist with the completion of necessary upgrades required to allow the concession stand to be fully operational.”

Rehrig noted that the Franklin Township Old Timers Game has raised $17,000 over the past six years.

He said last year’s game raised over $7,000 to be placed into college funds for Vanessa Hand’s children.

Hand was a former player for Franklin Township who passed away in 2019.

Rehrig said donations made toward the event are greatly appreciated.

He said that the game previously raised funds for the Franklin Township Fire Department, Lehighton Fire Department, Butch Rodgers Scholarship fund, and American Legion Post 314 of Lehighton.

Anyone who wishes to participate in the game may contact Rehrig at 610-377-5607 or 610-762-9518.

Those who wish to make a donation may contact Rehrig, Jeff Smith at 610-577-6486, or Tiffany Snyder at 610-762-7974.
