Palmerton Memorial Pool to celebrate 75 years

One of Palmerton’s crown jewels is about to turn three-quarters of a century old.

Yet, given its advanced age, the Palmerton Memorial Pool looks just as inviting and pristine as ever.

A program to celebrate the pool’s 75th anniversary will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The pool will be cleared and swimming will be paused during the ceremony.

The event is open to the public to attend; however, those who wear a swimming suit must pay daily admission, according to general manager Lee Arner.

Arner said guest speakers for the event include Carbon County Judge Steven R. Serfass, former borough Mayor Chris Olivia, and current borough Mayor Don Herrmann.

He said the Palmerton Band will be at the pool under the baby pool pavilion and will play a few songs (marches) for the event.

Arner said hot dogs on the grill and birch beer will be sold together for 75 cents.

He said a raffle will be held, and commemorative tote bags will be sold.

Arner said cupcakes will be handed out to everyone at the pool as well.

He spoke of the pool’s significance to the community.

“It has been an important place for parents to bring their kids to play; for friends to come together and relax; for swimmers to practice their skills; and for families to get away,” Arner said. “The community of Palmerton has enjoyed the pool and surrounding park area in many different ways.”

Arner attributes the pool’s long existence to a variety of factors.

“We give credit for the longevity of the pool to the previous and current members of the pool board, current and past managers and volunteers, and most importantly the community of Palmerton,” he said. “Without the support from the community, the pool would not thrive as it is.”

Arner added that future plans for the pool are to make necessary repairs so that it can stay open for another 75 years.

The pool is open from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 1-8 p.m. Sunday. It’s also open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for adult lap swim only.
