One killed in vehicle pileup crash on I-78

One person was killed in a five-vehicle pileup along Interstate 78 in Tilden Township, Berks County, at 4:42 a.m. on Monday.

State police at Hamburg investigated the crash and identified the deceased as a 23-year-old man from Lebanon.

According to troopers, the deceased’s car, a 1992 Mercury, sustained a mechanical failure and became disabled, partially blocking the right eastbound lane. The man exited his vehicle and tried to wave down passing motorists for help.

A 2022 Toyota, operated by a 26-year-old man from Pine Grove, rear-ended the Mercury, striking the victim in the process. After that collision the Toyota was rear-ended by a 2008 Honda driven by a 66-year-old man from Dumfries, Virginia. That vehicle was then rear-ended by a 2022 Honda operated by a 20-year-old man from Leesburg, Virginia.

The deceased was pronounced dead at the scene by a member of the county coroner’s office.

None of the names are being released at this time until family members are notified, troopers said. The investigation is continuing.
