Current Lehighton Fire Chief Wayne Nothstein is on his way to becoming the next coordinator of Carbon County’s Emergency Management Agency.

This morning, the county commissioners unanimously appointed Nothstein to the temporary position as EMA coordinator. Once his training is complete, he will succeed Carl S. Merluzzi, who has held the post for the past 6½ years and will retire on Sept. 29.

Nothstein, one of 13 applicants for the job, six of which were interviewed, will work alongside Merluzzi for the next two months. He will be relinquishing his fire chief position with the borough.
