Coroner releases ID of boy who drowned in Carbon lake

Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David Moylan III has identified the 17-year-old boy who drowned at Mauch Chunk Lake Park on Monday.

Moylan said the victim is Jose Atenco Augustine, of Mexico, and that a post-mortem CT scan was conducted Monday night, with the results indicating accidental drowning.

He said the boy was taken to St. Luke’s Miners Campus, where he was pronounced dead in the early evening.

Moylan said the victim’s uncle is taking responsibility and making arrangements to have the body of the victim taken back to his native country of Mexico.

Jim Thorpe Police Chief Joe Schatz said the police department was dispatched at 4:19 p.m. Monday for a report of a possible drowning.

Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller previously said the case was under Schuylkill County’s jurisdiction because the boy was taken to Miners in Coaldale.
