Boy, 17, drowns July 4 at MC Lake

A 17-year-old boy drowned at Mauch Chunk Lake on Monday.

Jim Thorpe Police Chief Joe Schatz said the police department was dispatched at 4:19 p.m. Monday for a report of a possible drowning.

Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David Moylan said the boy was taken to St. Luke’s Miners Campus, where he was pronounced dead in the early evening.

Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller said the case was under Schuylkill County’s jurisdiction because the boy was taken to Miners in Coaldale.

Miller said officials are working with a translator to get information from the family, who is from Mexico.

He said visitors formed a hand-to-hand bridge to bring the boy out of the water. The victim’s name has not been released.

Moylan said a post-mortem CT scan was conducted Monday night, with the results indicating accidental drowning.

Schatz said the investigation is still ongoing, as they are awaiting results from the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office.

“Our investigation is still pending,” Schatz said. “Once we officially hear back from the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office, then we’ll close out the case.”

The lake was crowded Monday. It reached capacity before 9 a.m.
