Driver facing hit/run charges in Carbon

A Berks County driver is facing a charge of hit-and-run after he fled the scene of a Carbon County crash.

State police at Lehighton said the incident occurred at 11:13 p.m. on June 25 along West Lizard Creek Road (Route 895), in East Penn Township.

Troopers said Luke A. Mengel, 20, of Shoemakersville, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado truck westbound when he lost control. The truck left the road on the right side and struck a utility pole.

Mengel then fled the scene prior to the arrival of troopers. He was later contacted and admitted to being the sole occupant of the vehicle and fleeing the scene. He told police he fell asleep. He reported no injuries and the truck had to be towed.

He was charged with accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle or property.
