Carbon looks to end fishing from docks at Mauch Chunk Lake

Carbon County is looking to again end fishing from the boat docks at Mauch Chunk Lake after hearing several complaints from boaters.

During the recent Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, David Horvath, park director, said that there have been some concerns raised about the state now allowing fishing from the docks.

He noted that the rules are that people who are fishing should yield to boaters, but he isn’t sure that is happening all the time.

“I thought about it and it used to be no fishing,” he said. “I think from our standpoint is it would be easier if there was no fishing from the docks.”

Horvath said that after speaking with the state officials, signs prohibiting fishing from the docks will again be posted.

Rick Forgay, board member, said that the signs could also point people to the handicap accessible fishing pier if they want to fish from a dock.

He noted that boating traffic on the lake has been steadily increasing so this may be a good way to solve any potential issues.

In addition, the commission talked about the railings that have been installed on the docks after receiving complaints from boaters because the railings are damaging boats if the boats hit them while tied up when entering or leaving the lake.

It was suggested about putting some type of foam padding on the railings to create a buffer between the boat and the railing.
