Carbon County court — DUI
A Schuylkill County man entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Friday to two drug counts and driving under the influence charge.
He was one of 19 defendants in pending DUI-related cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika.
Felony dropped
Philip Carnese, 37, of Shenandoah, entered his pleas via video from the state correctional institution at Dallas, Luzerne County, in three pending cases.
He pleaded to two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count each of DUI and driving under suspension - DUI related. In exchange for the pleas two felony counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance were dropped.
He was arrested on the first drug count on July 21, 2019, filed by state police at Lehighton for an incident in the 300 block of White Street, Weissport, where troopers went to serve a warrant on Carnese. The second drug arrest occurred on July 31, 2019, at the same location by Weissport police. In both cases felony counts were dropped.
The DUI of a controlled substance occurred on April 21, 2021, filed by state police at Lehighton following a stop along Mill Road in Mahoning Township.
Carnese is currently serving a one and a half to three year sentence imposed in Schuylkill County. He told the court he has completed his minimum term and is awaiting a parole hearing.
On the DUI charge Matika sentenced him to serve 90 days to 60 months in the county prison, ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months, render 100 hours of community service and supply a DNA sample. On the suspension count he was fined $1,000.
On the two drug counts he was sentenced to serve three to 12 months in jail on each with all the terms running concurrent to each other and concurrent to the Schuylkill sentence. If he is paroled from the state system he will be brought back to Carbon to serve the 90 days in the DUI case.
Other pleas
Other defendants entering guilty pleas included:
James Bednarek, 65, of Kunkletown, was arrested on Jan. 18 by state police at Lehighton along Spruce Hollow Road in Towamensing Township. A blood test revealed a 0.14 BAC.
A first offense, he was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.
Alan James Arthofer, 32, of Bowmanstown, was arrested on Oct. 6, 2019, by state police at Lehighton along Route 895 at Bowmanstown, for DUI of a controlled substance.
Sentencing was deferred so he can get a drug and alcohol evaluation and also apply for the house arrest program.
Amanda J. Hosier,Edward J. Hull, 59, of Saylorsburg, was arrested on Oct. 30, 2021, by state police at Lehighton along Station Street in Towamensing Township after being involved in a crash.
Sentencing was deferred so he can apply for the house arrest program.
Erica Elsbeth Hosfeld, 43, of Jim Thorpe, was arrested on April 27, 2021, by state police at Lehighton along Overlook Drive in Franklin Township. A test showed a 0.15 BAC.
Sentencing was deferred so she can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation and apply for the house arrest program.
Jonell Lynn Dye, 45, of Palmerton, was arrested on June 26, 2021, along Walnut Drive in Lower Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton for DUI of alcohol. She refused a test.
She was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.
She also pleaded to driving under suspension - DUI related, and was fined $1,000.
Raymond A. Chieves, 60, of Philadelphia, was arrested on Dec. 8, 2019, by state police along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township. In a plea deal a DUI charge was dropped and Chieves pleaded to summary offenses of disregard for traffic lane and careless driving and was fined a total of $50 and costs. The commonwealth said it would have a hard time proving the DUI charge.
Elizabeth G. Bonhomme, 32, of Parryville, was arrested on Aug. 1, 2021, by state police at Lehighton along Bankway in Lehighton. A test showed 0.18 BAC.
She was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.
Tanya Marie Conklin, 45, of Coaldale, was arrested on Sept. 5, 2021, by Mahoning Township police along Lower Nis Hollow Drive. A test showed 0.13 BAC.
Sentencing was deferred so she can apply for the house arrest program.
Sara Jane Fink, 39, of Lehighton, was arrested on Feb. 9, 2021, by state police at Lehighton, along Interchange Road in Franklin Township for DUI of a controlled substance.
Sentencing was deferred so she can apply for the house arrest program.
Stephanie Hunsberger, 38, of Slatington, was arrested on May 9, 2017, along Patterson Street by Lansford police. A test showed 0.15 BAC. The police report also indicated the presence of a controlled substance.
She was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail, pay a fine of $300 and one year license suspension.
She was given credit for 11 days spent in jail on the charge and paroled.
Audrey Jane Makara, 65, of Lansford, was arrested on May 9, 2021, along Snyder Avenue by Lansford police. A test showed 0.28 BAC.
Sentencing was deferred so she can apply for the house arrest program.
Susan Freundt, 62, of Lehighton, was arrested on Nov. 7, 2021, by Lehighton police along Main Lane for DUI of a controlled substance.
She was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, pay a fine of $1,000, license suspended for a year and render 25 hours of community service.
She was given credit for two days already served and will begin serving the remaining day at noon on June 6.
William E. Cormier, 45, of Lehighton, was arrested on Feb. 23, 2021, by state police at Lehighton along Long Run Road in Franklin Township, for DUI of a controlled substance.

Walter Freundt, 65, of Lehighton, was arrested on May 29, 2021, by state police at Lehighton along Bank Street in Bowmanstown. A test showed 0.11 BAC.
Sentencing was deferred so he can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.
Ashley Marie Lewis, 33, of Lansford, was arrested on March 12, 2021, by state police at Lehighton along West Lizard Creek Road in East Penn Township. In a plea deal the DUI charge was dropped in she pleaded to a summary offense of driving an unregistered vehicle.
A fine of $78 and costs was imposed.
Cherie Esther Reiss, 31, of Gilbert, was arrested on Oct. 14, 2020, by state police at Lehighton along State Road in Franklin Township. In a plea deal DUI and possession of a controlled substance charges were dropped and Reiss pleaded to possession of drug paraphernalia.
She was placed on probation for six months and ordered to render 25 hours of community service and get a drug and alcohol evaluation.
Christopher Michael Frantz, 34, of Lehighton, was arrested on Sept. 18, 2020, by state police at Lehighton along Route 248 at Parryville, for DUI of a controlled substance.
Sentencing was deferred so he can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.
Sentencings
The following defendants previously entered guilty pleas and were sentenced.
Bonnier Hardy, 56, of Bowmanstown, entered pleas in two pending cases.
In both cases she was placed in the Restrictive Conditions of Probation program (house arrest). In the first case she was place for six months with the first 10 days on electronic monitoring and pay a fine of $300. The second case she was placed for five years with the first 100 days on monitoring, render a total of 100 of community service, pay a fine of $1,500 and license suspended for 18 months. The terms run concurrently.
She was arrested on the first count on March 14, 2021, by Lehighton police along South Fourth Street, and the second on May 6, 2021, by state police at Lehighton along Delaware Avenue in Palmerton. Both for DUI of a controlled substance.
William Paul Kintz, 26, of Lehighton, was placed in the RCP for six months with the first 10 days on monitoring and ordered to pay a fine of $1,000, license suspended for a year and render 25 hours of community service. He was charged on Oct. 6, 2021, by state police at Lehighton along Mill Run Road in Franklin Township for DUI of a controlled substance.
Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of over $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.
