Farmers market vouchers to be available in Schuylkill

Farmers market vouchers will soon be available to eligible Schuylkill County older adults. There are several ways to receive the vouchers. Applicants may visit a county Senior Community Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 16 through July 7.

Centers are located at Mahanoy City Senior Community Center, 38 W. Center St., Mahanoy City; the Pottsville Senior Community Center, 201 N. Center St., Pottsville; the Schuylkill Haven Senior Community Center, 340 Hayden St., Schuylkill Haven; and the Tremont Senior Community Center, 139 Clay St. Tremont.

Additional distributions are scheduled for the Hometown Farmers Market, 125 Mahanoy Ave., Tamaqua, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 22; at Shenandoah Senior Citizens, 232 N. Market St., Shenandoah from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 17; Kenneth Stehr and Sons Farmers Markets, 29 Kettle Road, Pittman, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18; Zion Lutheran Church, Fourth and Lewis streets, Minersville, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 28; and at the Shenandoah Senior Citizens, 232 N. Market St., Shenandoah, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 1.

The final distribution event will occur from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Taste and See Pennsylvania Produce event at The Island, Broadway Street, Schuylkill Haven.

To be eligible, applicants must turn 60 before Dec. 31 of this year, and be a county resident. Income guideline for eligibility is $25,142 for a single-person household and $33,874 for a two-person household, including investment interest, wages, Social Security, unemployment, and similar distributions.

The voucher program does not include adults living in nursing care centers or in residential facilities in which meals are provided. Only one set of checks will be distributed to each eligible applicant each year.
