Hospital plans to open next week upon receipt of license

Lehigh Valley Hospital - Carbon expects to open sometime next week upon the receipt of its license.

Terry Purcell, president of Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Northwest Region, said the opening of the $80 million, 100,578-square-foot hospital along Route 443 in Mahoning Township is contingent on Pennsylvania Department of Health approval.

“We anticipate having our license early next week,” he said. “We’ll be opening the day after we receive our license.”

Purcell said the Carbon site is a full-service hospital. There are two entrances to the hospital.

“We’re going to have some of the best doctors taking care of the Carbon County residents,” he said. “Our cardiology equipment is second to none, our operating rooms are second to none, we have a beautiful health center, we are adding numerous physicians to Carbon County, an ear, nose and throat surgeon, bringing in some top-level trained physicians to be there.”

Christine Biege, president of LVH Carbon, said the campus has 17 different specialty offices with a variety of services, including cardiology, oncology, and ear nose and throat among them.

Purcell said they have 900 Carbon County residents who work for them throughout Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Hospital features

Purcell said the hospital will have 20 inpatient and 16 emergency room beds.

He said there are two operating rooms, and added there will eventually be four. There are also two procedure rooms.

Other services include complete telemedicine services; heart institute; cancer institute, institute for surgical excellence and imaging services.

Attached to the hospital is a medical office building where patients can visit their practitioner or access other LVHN services.

Purcell said the health center will feature outpatient rehab; cardiac rehab; pharmacy; infusion center; and LVPG/Coordinated Health.

He said there are LVPG providers, with orthopedic surgeons; OB/GYN; general surgeon; colorectal surgeon; cardiology; ENT (Ear, nose, throat); physiatry; rheumatology; and pain management.

Purcell assured the hospital will be fully staffed, and added they will supplement staff with members who are employees from Cedar Crest.

“We will definitely have 100% staff to care for patients on Day 1,” Purcell said.

Purcell noted that the first day the hospital opens, they will have 17 infusion patients being cared for at their cancer institute scheduled for treatments.

“Which is just another example of people who have a need for services, now they can stay locally,” he said. “We’re able to bring that care close to home.”

Community tours

Several community-oriented events have been planned to give people a glimpse of the facilities.

The first is a community open house from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the campus off Route 443.

“There will be lots of activities, Purcell said.

Biege said the community open house will include tours of the facility, and added there will be food trucks on hand, along with some giveaways.

Biege said those who attend will get to meet some of the staff and see the hospital.

“It’s an opportunity to see the equipment, and see how some of the things work,” Biege said. “This is a chance for the community to embrace its hospital, and see everything that it offers before it opens.”

Biege said that on Monday, an invite-only ribbon-cutting will take place at 1 p.m. that can be viewed virtually on its two Facebook pages; Lehigh Valley Hospital Carbon, and Lehigh Valley Health Network.
