Palmerton Council splits on carnival vote

A request by Crusaders for a Cause to hold its annual spring carnival next spring in the Palmerton Borough Park eked out just enough support.

On a narrow 4-3 vote, borough council on Thursday agreed to allow the group to conduct its 17th annual event May 18-21 in the borough park.

Councilmen Kris Hoffner, Richard Nothstein, Cory Kepner and council President Terry Costenbader were in favor. Councilmen Andrew Hollywood, Michael Ballard and Councilwoman Holly Hausman-Sell were opposed.

Crusaders for a Cause held its 16th annual spring carnival May 19-22 in the borough park.

Before the vote, Hollywood said he was concerned about the park because it is being used so heavily as various functions are held throughout the year.

Costenbader said it’s getting to the point where different municipalities are even starting to use the park.

Proceeds from the carnival benefits local charities. Crusaders has donated nearly $35,000 to various charities throughout the years. The main donation from this year’s carnival will be the American Cancer Society, which will be presented at next year’s Cancer Telethon in April.

Also on Thursday, council unanimously approved a use request from the Palmerton Community Festival to hold its event Sept. 9-11 in the borough park.

Lastly, council unanimously approved a use request from Valor for the Motorcycle Ride/Rally to be held on Sept. 17.
