NW’s Yost medals at states

Northwestern’s Faith Yost capped a stellar season with a medal in the Class 3A high jump at the PIAA Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

The junior cleared 5-4 to tie for sixth-place.

“It really means a lot to me,” said Yost. “My mindset was just to come out and have fun, but I’m really happy I was able to get a medal.”

Yost made 5-4 on her third attempt, the same as South Fayette’s Grace Howard, who also placed sixth.

Methacton’s Addison Gormley and New Castle’s Maria Owens both cleared 5-4 on their second attempt and tied for fourth.

South Western’s Madeline Lehker cleared 5-4 on her first attempt to place third.

Yost was seeded fourth at 5-5, which she cleared to win the district title a week ago.

She missed her three attempts at 5-6 after clearing 5-4.

Yost also qualified for states in the 100 hurdles, an event she also won last week at districts.

Prior to clearing 5-4, Yost cleared 4-10, 5-0 and 5-2 with just one attempt.

The junior has had a stellar season, winning Colonial League titles in the 100 and 300 hurdles, high jump and as a member of the 1600 relay.

Yost was the only area athlete to medal during the second day of the state meet.

Palmerton’s Nataly Walters placed 12th in the Class 2A triple jump with a leap of 35-7.25 on her third attempt. The freshman was seeded fifth with a mark of 36-7.

Walters made it to the podium with a leap of 17-2.75 in the long jump on Friday for her first state medal.

She qualified for states in four events, running the 100 and 200 preliminaries on Friday.

Northern Lehigh’s Emily Moyer cleared 9-6 and finished in a four-way tie for 10th place in the Class 2A pole vault. Moyer cleared 9-6 on her first attempt, but was unable to clear 10-0.

Moyer was a runner-up in the event last week at districts. She was seeded 10th.

Panther Valley’s Izabella Bochicchio placed 15th in the Class 2A shot put with a mark of 33-9.5, which she got on her first attempt. She was seeded 17th after winning the event last week at districts with a throw of 34-8.75.
