Schuylkill renews inmate housing pact

Schuylkill County commissioners on Wednesday renewed an inmate housing agreement with Clinton County for three years at a cost of $70 per inmate per day.

In April, the most recent numbers available, the county had 51 inmates in out-of-county jails at a cost of between $67 and $70 per inmate per day.

Even with the overflow, 36 inmates were sleeping three to a cell.

As of the beginning of March, the county has spent $90,356 to house inmates in other counties to alleviate overcrowding in its 171-year-old jail on Sanderson Street in Pottsville.

Last year, the county set aside $932,292 for what it calls “outsourcing” of inmates. This year, the spending plan is $1.5 million.

In other matters Wednesday, commissioners:

• Approved contracts with the following people to serve on the Schuylkill County for the Tax Assessment Bureau Board of Appeals from June 1 through Dec. 31, 2022: Francis A. Spokas, Tamaqua; John J. Houseknecht, St. Clair; and Timothy McGinley, Ashland.

• Approved hiring Guyette Communications Industries to upgrade the existing security system for the prison for $55,986 from May 26 through Oct. 30, 2022.

• The Salary Board approved the appointment of Loretta Flammer, Hamburg, Berks County, as a clerk typist 2 for the Children and Youth Services Agency at a wage of $13.71 an hour beginning June 13.

• The Salary Board also approved Richard Montone, Wayne Township, as a legal assistant in Court Administration at $15 an hour; Bridget Zedonek, Norwegian Township, as a secretary 3 in Adult Probation at $27.72 an hour; Dylan Stephen, Schuylkill Haven as an Adult Probation aid at $19.10 an hour; Daniel Snopek, East Brunswick Township, as a full-time Adult Probation aid at $22 an hour; and Damon Yost, Pottsville; Trevor Sherakas, Pottsville; Alexa Murray, West Mahanoy, and William McGowan, Port Carbon, as site aides at $14.28 an hour each.
