No. 9 mine holds annual miners picnic, car show

Years ago, miners picnics took place throughout the coal region.

On Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford will bring back the spirit of those events with its annual Miners Picnic and Antique Automobile Club of America car show.

The picnic is a Memorial Day celebration with something for all ages.

It will feature homemade ethnic food, antique, classic and street rod vehicles, music from DJ Shawn Frederickson, and mine tours.

Admission to the grounds, museum, car show and parking are free. This is a rain or shine event open to the public.

The Anthracite Region Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America car show will present an antique, classic and street rod vehicle show on the grounds. Anyone wishing to display their automobile can register when they arrive on Sunday. There are no registration fees and it is rain or shine.

A variety of homemade ethnic foods will be available for sale at the picnic pavilion including halupki, halushki, pierogies, turkey barbecue, hamburger barbecue, ham and bean soup, hot dogs, homemade desserts, and a variety of beverages. Food sales begin at 11 a.m. Takeout is available.

The main attraction is the guided underground tours of the No. 9 Coal Mine, which first opened in 1855. Tours of the world’s oldest operating deep mine are approximately one hour long and include the mine train ride into the mine where visitors then embark on a walking tour to see the massive elevator shaft, mule-ways, underground hospital, Go Devil, and the daily work areas of coal miners. The temperature underground is approximately 52 degrees year-round. Visitors can browse new exhibits and artifacts inside the area’s largest coal mining museum and gift shop, located in the circa-1912 miner’s wash shanty building.
