Memorial Day events

Saturday

• Jim Thorpe Legion Post 304, William Diehm First Vice Commander, has planned the following events for the Memorial Day weekend. All times are approximate. Saturday, the Post will lay a wreath and say a prayer at the following war memorials: WWI Monument Memorial Park, 8:30 a.m.; WWII Monument North Street, 8:45 a.m.; Route 903 Bridge, 9 a.m.; War Monument Hazard Square, 9:15 a.m.; Vietnam War Monument West Broadway, 9:30 a.m.; Korean War Monument Diligent Fire Station, 9:45 a.m.; Civil War Monument Liberties Hill Road, 10 a.m.

Sunday

• Summit Hill: The Legion will read the roll call at St. Joseph Cemetery, White Bear, at 1 p.m., followed by the Legion’s firing squad providing the salute to veterans.

• Polk Township: Memorial Day event, 2 p.m. May 29 at the memorial at Trach Road and Interchange Road in Kresgeville. If there is inclement weather, the event will be indoors at Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church across the street.

• Nesquehoning: Members of the Nesquehoning VFW Post 8008 will do memorials at the outlying cemeteries in the town, beginning at noon. They will start at the Knauf Memorial on the Broad Mountain, then continue to cemeteries at the east end of town, the memorial sites and cemetery in New Columbus. The final segment will be at the Hauto memorial by the Hauto Fire Company. Each ceremony starts with a chaplain’s prayer, followed by honor guard salute and ends with bugle taps.

Monday

• Jim Thorpe Legion Post 304 on Monday will visit the following cemeteries, with prayer, rifle salute and taps at each: Mauch Chunk Cemetery, Jim Thorpe, 8:30 a.m.; Immaculate Church Cemetery, Jim Thorpe, 9 a.m.; Evergreen Cemetery, Jim Thorpe, 9:30; St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Jim Thorpe, 10 a.m.; Christ Lutheran Church on Church Road, Penn Forest, 10:30 a.m.; Old Albrightsville Cemetery, Albrightsville, 10:45 a.m.; St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Albrightsville, Old Stage Road, 11 a.m. All times are approximate.

• Summit Hill: Services begin at 10 a.m. in Ludlow Park. The service will be followed by an 11 a.m. start of the Summit Hill Memorial Day Parade.

• Nesquehoning hosts annual parade by the UVO, beginning on the east side of town at 8:30 a.m. Formation begins at 8 a.m. on West Railroad Street and kick off to travel down Catawissa beginning at 8:30 sharp. Stops include the Veterans Memorial Monument at three points; Veterans Memorial near Turkey Hill; and end on Center Street in front of the Nesquehoning VFW. A ceremony will take place at the post.

• Tamaqua’s annual Memorial Day Parade, hosted by the American Legion C.H. Berry Post 173, May 30 at 10 a.m. Staging will begin at 9 a.m. by the old Maff Motors Building on East Broad Street. Memorial service at the Odd Fellows Cemetery after the parade and at the American Legion Post 173 following the service.

• The Lansford American Legion Post 123 will be conducting their annual Memorial Day program on Monday at the veterans monument located in Kennedy Park beginning at 9 a.m. Retired Army 1st Sgt. Gregory Wright will be the featured speaker.

• Palmerton: Parade, 10 a.m. Monday. Services will follow at 11 a.m. in Palmerton Borough Park. In case of rain, services will be held in the S.S. Palmer gymnasium.

• Lehighton: Main service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the upper Lehighton Park Amphitheater.

• Slatington: Parade, 10 a.m. Monday at American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16. Main service, 10:30 a.m. Monday, Fairview Cemetery.

• Weatherly Memorial Day parade, May 30.

• American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, Memorial Day ceremony, 11 a.m. May 30. It is open to the community.

• Northwestern Lehigh Veterans Memorial dedication ceremony, 11 a.m. Monday, Ontelaunee Park, 7344 Kings Highway, New Tripoli.
