Lehighton UVO to conduct Memorial Day services

The Lehighton United Veterans Organization has announced the schedule for Memorial Day services.

The main service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the upper Lehighton Park Amphitheater.

Commander Kevin Long said it’s important to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“Every day we should be thankful for those who protect our country,” Long said. “It’s a good time we are together to honor our brothers and sisters who protect our country.”

Long said everyone should take some time out of their day to remember those who gave all.

Rural services will begin Sunday. Long said they will visit 15 cemeteries over the weekend, and that they put all new flags on all of them.

“I believe (the Lehighton UVO) as a whole does more services, honors than any in the county,” he said. “It’s so humbling to see all the flags in the cemeteries.”

Long added that the UVO needs members, and that there are no dues to join for anyone who is a veteran and is in good standing with any veterans organization.

“We’re certainly looking for young members,” he said. “We’re aging; we’d like to get some in their 40s.”
