Calvary Lewistown

Pastor Ralph Saunders will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Evening service of praise and worship at 7 p.m. No prayer meeting on May 25. Ascension day hymn sing on May 26 at 7:15 p.m. at Steigerwalt’s Church of God, Route 443, west of McKeansburg.

Memorial Day celebration service, May 29 at 10:25 a.m. with Pastor Ralph Saunders conducting the service and Pastor Jim Williams presenting the message as well as the American Legion presenting honors and taps.

Poppy Sale

Andreas VFW Post 5069 will be at the Hometown Market on May 25 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. selling poppies. They will also be at Leiby’s and EX Market on May 29.

Tamaqua Seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met on May 13 with 26 members in attendance. President, Jean Machamer opened the meeting with the reading “Live Each Day.”

Prayers were requested for member Melody Weicker.

The group meets every Thursday at the Coaldale Complex at 1 p.m. Anyone 55 and older is invited to attend.

St. Peter’s West Penn

May 23: 10:30 a.m. Preschool Moving Up Celebration. May 24, 10:30 a.m. Preschool Graduation. May 26: 6 p.m. Cherub Choir rehearsal; 7 p.m. Senior Choir rehearsal.

May 24 through May 28, church offices closed.

May 29: 9 a.m., worship service; 10:15 a.m. Sunday school; 11 a.m. Memorial Day Service at St. Peter’s; NO Confirmation Class; 6 p.m. Girl Scouts

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday at Zion Church Lewistown Valley. Sunday school is scheduled for 9:30. A brief congregational meeting will be held immediately after the service.

Garden Club

The May meeting of the Lewistown Garden Club will be held May 24 at 7 p.m. in Zion Church Social Hall, Lewistown Valley. As a reminder, the program will include a member plant exchange.

At the April meeting members enjoyed a tour of Blue Mountain Farms where members learned many interesting aspects of the wholesale growing market.

Preceptor Alpha Upsilon

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi recently celebrated Founder’s Day, along with members of Xi Delta Omega and Torchbearer Theta. A dinner honoring the 90th anniversary of the sorority was held at Knepper’s Restaurant. The members of Preceptor Alpha Upsilon presented the Girl of the Year Award to Lewann Neifert and the Program of the Year Award to Patti Confer. The theme for next year, “Friendships at our Fingertips,” was announced. The chapter also voted to make a donation to the Tamaqua Public Library. All three chapters sponsored the Beta Sigma Phi scholarship presented to a senior student at Tamaqua Area High School.

Memorial Day Parade

Tamaqua’s Annual Memorial Day Parade will be once again be hosted by the American Legion C.H. Berry Post 173 on May 30 at 10 a.m. Staging will begin at 9 a.m. by the old Maff Motors Building on East Broad Street.

The American Legion Honor Guard will fire a volley over the War Memorial.

This year’s Grand Marshal is Karl Smulligan, a retired colonel in the U.S. Army and Pennsylvania National Guard who honorably served in Vietnam and Desert Storm. Miss Layluh Greitz, 6, is this year’s Poppy Queen and is a Jr. ALA member.

There will be a memorial service at the Odd Fellows Cemetery after the parade and at the American Legion Post 173 following the service. Any group or organizations that would like to participate in the parade can call David Meredith at 570-668-3356.

American Primitive

Sunday worship service is at 10:30 a.m. at American Primitive Methodist Church. The service is available at www.tamaquachurch.org and www.facebook.com/PMChurchTamaqua.

There will be no Sunday school until further notice. Hope in the Mountains Nar-Anon Family Group meets at 57 Hunter St.
