Legion to hold inaugural basket social

The American Legion Post 314 of Lehighton will hold its inaugural Spring Basket Social.

It will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The drawing will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday on Facebook Live.

Susan Steager, steward, said they have 125 baskets and 50 gift certificates. She added a person must be 21 to win a basket with alcohol in it.

Steager said they have close to the 200 mark and said they’ve had a lot of members from the Legion and community members who donated, along with lots of businesses.

“We’d like to thank all the local businesses that have made donations,” Steager said. “They have been very giving, and we’d like to thank everyone who was involved in helping with this.”

She said the items available include a 50-inch TV, patio set, handmade flags, fire pit, household items, baby items, and a handmade quilt, among others.

Steager said there will be food, beverages and a bake sale.

She said the basket raffle costs $5 per card, or five cards for $20. Large ticket items are $1 apiece, she said.

Staff member Jonathan Blackwell-Rodgers explained the significance of the fundraiser.

“This is the biggest opportunity to bring multiple people into the building,” Blackwell-Rodgers said. “And also take home some great items.”

Steager said proceeds go toward the Legion’s building fund.

“Our air-conditioning service runs on Freon,” she said. “We need to put in a whole new air-conditioning system in the building.”

As a result, Steager said they’re aiming for $20,000 for the air-conditioning system, and added any proceeds from the fundraiser will go into a separate building fund.

Blackwell-Rodgers noted that the Legion is always accepting membership of current and past military.

“That’s what we’re here for,” he said. “The younger generation in who come out of the service to become members.”
