Tamaqua adds concierge to help station visitors

Tamaqua SOS (Save Our Station) is seeking applications for a summer concierge at the Tamaqua Railroad Station Visitors’ Center.

The person will provide information to visitors and tourists on evenings, weekends and other busy times.

“This is a perfect job for a college student on summer break,” said Micah Gursky, executive director of the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership, the nonprofit organization that owns the historic station and operates a visitors center and gift shop in the former ticket office.

The position is a part-time seasonal position made possible in part by a grant from Explore Schuylkill, the region’s tourism promotion agency.

“The mission of Explore Schuylkill is to increase the number of visitors to Schuylkill County. Funding a position like this - a great new venture in Tamaqua - provides an opportunity for direct access to those visitors,” said Keri Johnson, director of communications for Explore Schuylkill.

The station near the Five Points intersection in downtown Tamaqua is typically busy, thanks to the popular Tamaqua Train Station Restaurant. In addition, it hosts free summer concerts on Thursday evenings during the summer and serves as the departure and arrival location for tourist train excursions between Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe.

It will be the first time for a concierge.

“We are super excited,” Gursky said.

Vanessa Gerhard, administrative coordinator for Explore Schuylkill, said the position will have a reaching impact.

“The concierge is able to talk to visitors and match their interests to all the great things there are to do in Schuylkill County,” she said. “We have so much to offer, and this is a personal, one-on-one opportunity for our visitors to get information on restaurants, stores, lodging, attractions and anything they’d like to explore.”

The ideal candidate will have excellent communications skills and a passion for hospitality and helping other explore and learn about the community.

The position will run from Memorial Day to Labor Day. For more information, or to submit a letter of interest, email Gursky at micah@tacp.info.
