Senior Center news

The Panther Valley Senior Center has announced the menu for the week of May 9-13 is:

Monday: Baked fish, buttered noodles, vegetable blend, rice pudding or turkey BLT

Tuesday: Swiss steak, scalloped potatoes, beets, orange or chef salad

Wednesday: Sweet and sour pork, brown rice, Asian vegetables, pineapple, cookie or ham and cheese sandwich

Thursday: Crispy chicken, cheesy mashed potatoes, broccoli, peaches or beef Caesar salad

Friday: Vegetable soup, cheeseburger, bean salad, pudding or barbecue chicken salad

The center also announced upcoming events:

Mother’s Day Tea on May 9 at 10:30 a.m.; speaker from the Nesquehoning Historical Society on May 10 at 11 a.m.; Senior Games practice on May 11 at 10 a.m.; Birthday Bingo on May 12 at 10:45 a.m.; Women’s Pool on May 13 at 10:30 a.m.

Pool, Skeeball, Cards, Games and Socialization available every day. New members always welcome.

End of year schedule

Panther Valley School District has released the end of year schedule for the various schools.

June 1, 2, 3 and 6 will be half days.

The junior-senior high school will dismiss at 11:30 a.m.; intermediate school, 12:15 p.m.; elementary, 12:15 p.m.

On June 7, the junior-senior high school will dismiss at 10:45 a.m.; while both intermediate and elementary schools will dismiss at 11:30 a.m.

The last day for cafeteria lunches for all grades is June 7.

Nesquehoning

Fishing Derby

The 12th annual Nesquehoning Conservation Club Connell McCall Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday at the club’s nature center pond, located in the Hauto Valley Estates along Industrial Drive.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the derby for children ages 15 and under runs from 9 a.m. to noon. No adults will be allowed to fish the pond during the derby.

Children will receive a free hot dog and drink.

There are three age groups, 7 and under; 8-11 and 12-15. Prizes will awarded to the top three biggest fish in each age group, as well as the largest fish overall.

Food and beverages will also be available for purchase.

The pond will be open to children only on Saturday and Sunday and regular operations will resume on Monday.

Clothing drive

The Shrine of St. Therese of Lisieux in Nesquehoning is hosting a used clothing drive.

Drop-offs will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on May 14, 21 and 28 at Madonna Hall, located right behind the shrine.

If you are unable to drop off donations, but would like to schedule a pickup, call 570-669-6666.

Items that are being collected are wearable and usable clothing for men, women and children; belts, handbags and stuffed animals; bedding, curtains and towels; and shoes.

Items should be placed in a tightly tied 30-gallon plastic bag. Shoes should be in a separate bag from clothing.
