Letter to the editor: Use your vote wisely

Dear Editor:

We are living in dangerous times. Democracy and the rule of law are under attack, both here and around the globe. In Europe, democracy in Ukraine is fighting for its survival against a brutal assault by a Russian thug, while here in the U.S., there are much more subtle forces at work.

With each passing day, we learn more about the events of Jan. 6, 2021. On that fateful day, as we all witnessed, there was an attempt to overturn a free and fair election in order to prevent the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to another for the first time in our nation’s history. The insurrection was based on the Big Lie that the election was “stolen.” To date, there has been no evidence to support that accusation. None.

It is becoming increasingly clear that this “coup d’etat” was planned and organized by then President Donald Trump and several of his closest advisers. Furthermore, it was aided and abetted by Republican members of Congress who, even after the failed coup attempt, STILL VOTED AGAINST CERTIFYING THE RESULTS OF THE ELECTION. These are dangerous people who, by their actions, cannot be trusted with power. They are not representing us. They are representing themselves, and we should not tolerate it.

Therefore, I am calling on every Republican in Carbon and Schuylkill County to stand up in defense of our constitutional republic and the rule of law. I urge you to send the strongest message possible against the proponents of the Big Lie and those who no longer believe in, or accept, the results of our elections. That means withholding your vote or voting for someone more deserving of your trust.

Sincerely,

Mark Trusa
