LAHS art students paint mural inside police department
A mural recently painted inside the Lehighton Police Department is a real piece of work.
Or, as members of the department would assuredly attest, more like an artistic masterpiece.
The painting is the work of seniors Madison Brown, Holly Fasching, and Hailey Miller from the Lehighton Area High School Art Department.
Together, the soon to be graduates completed the work recently as part of the art department’s senior project, said high school art teacher Diane Micheletti.
For their project, Micheletti, who is also National Art Honor Society adviser, said the seniors painted a mural on the back office wall inside the police department.
“(Former Lehighton Borough Police) Chief (Brian) Biechy reached out to us to see if we would be interested in making a piece of art or doing a mural for the police station,” Micheletti said. “They had a wall that was damaged, and thought it would be nice to have some of our students create something for the wall.”
Micheletti said that last year, they had a mug created with the police flag behind it with a shield with a very simplistic landscape.
“We kind of elevated the idea and we did a picture of the Lehigh River from the McCall bridge,” she said. “We created this design in the classroom on a big piece of white paper, and when we go to the police station, it made it easy to transfer the design to the wall, and then each girl took a section to paint.”
Overall, Micheletti said the project took three full days to complete.
“My girls who worked on this, they were so excited to leave their mark on the community to use their talent to give back,” she said. “The level of artistic talent that we have in our school is outstanding.”
Micheletti added the project ties in well with the art curriculum.
“With our club, part of our program of study is we like to use our talent in order to beautify our school, and also our community,” she said. Community service is a part of our club criteria.”
Micheletti said the club isn’t done just yet.
“These girls have also just been recruited on the Weissport mural, which we will starting next week,” she said. “We’re working with artist Ruth Bush; we’re going to be putting in important historical landmarks, and the girls will be working with her to paint it.”
