New York woman admits to assault; face big restitution bill

A New York state woman, scheduled to pick a jury on Monday in Carbon County court, instead entered into a plea agreement with the district attorney’s office and pleaded guilty to an assault count and now faces a big restitution bill.

Rebecca Prudence Hetherington, 47, of Staten Island, pleaded to simple assault, a misdemeanor 2.

She was charge by state police at Fern Ridge for an incident that occurred on July 11, 2019, at the Skirmish Paintball, located along North Meckesville Road, in Penn Forest Township.

Troopers said their investigation revealed that Hetherington and the victim, (a female, began to argue at the campgrounds. After the argument Hetherington stomped on the victim’s right ankle while on the ground. During the altercation the victim suffered a broken right ankle, troopers said.

The affidavit of probable cause submitted by the troopers indicated there was a witness to the incident.

Judge Steven R. Serfass accepted the plea and placed Hetherington on probation for a 24 months and ordered her to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, have no contact with the victim, pay court costs of over $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation.

She was also ordered to make restitution for medical bills the victim sustained of $23,344.95.
