Lackawanna County man admits assault count, probation violation

A Lackawanna County man admitted in Carbon County court on Tuesday to an assault involving a fellow inmate at the county prison and a probation violation and was sentenced to addition prison time.

Ryan Matthew Rehrig, 42, of Abington, appeared before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to plea to simple assault and admit to violating his probation in another case. He appeared via video from the county prison.

He was charged with assaulting a fellow prisoner at the county jail on Aug. 14, 2018, in which the victim had to be taken to a hospital for treatment.

In a plea deal with the district attorney’s office, Rehrig agreed to admit to violating his probation in a theft of services case and accept a new sentence in exchange for the DA dropping felony counts of aggravated assault and assault by a prisoner in the prison incident.

After admitting to the probation violation, Nanovic resentenced Rehrig to serve 339 days “backtime” effective Feb. 23.

On the assault count Nanovic sentenced him to serve six to one day less 24 months in prison, concurrent with the probation violation charge. He also received 179 days credit on that charge.

He was also ordered to make restitution of $1,510.57 for medical bills paid by the county for the injured inmate, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of over $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.

Rehrig’s maximum term on the probation violation runs to Jan. 28, 2023.
