Local Roundup: Results from April 23

Palmerton and Panther Valley both posted wins in baseball and softball action over the weekend.

In the Panthers’ baseball win, Tyler Black tossed a no-hitter.

BASEBALL

Panther Valley-LLA

Panther Valley slugged four home runs, two by Logan Fisher, to cruise to a 17-1 non-league victory over Lincoln Leadership Academy.

The power surge was combined with the no-hit pitching of Black, who allowed no walks and struck out 11 in five innings.

Fisher belted solo homers in the fourth and fifth innings. The Panthers also received a grand slam off the bat of Brad Jones in the fifth, while Michael Pascoe went deep in the first frame.

Pascoe ended with two hits and three RBIs, while Black walked twice and scored three runs. PV also received a hit, an RBI and two runs from Cody Orsulak.

The Panthers are now 8-3, while the Lions slipped to 1-6.

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Palmerton pushed across three runs in each of the first three innings en route to a 10-4 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

The Blue Bombers’ leadoff hitter Daniel Lucykanish had a good day at the plate, finishing with two extra base hits (double, triple), two runs and two RBIs.

Chase Reph reached base in all four of his plate appearances with two hits and a pair of walks. He also scored once and had an RBI. Jacob Grammes added a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Connor Beahm had a hit and two RBIs, and Luke Netznik chipped in with a hit and two runs.

Josh Suto earned the pitching win, coming on in relief in the third inning and allowing just an unearned run while striking out five.

The win lifted Palmerton’s record to 8-4 overall, and 5-1 in the league, while Catty dipped to 5-8 and 4-7.

So. Lehigh-Northwestern

Northwestern handed Southern Lehigh its first Colonial League loss of the season with a 7-4 victory.

Tigers leadoff hitter Justin Augustus had two hits and knocked in three runs, while Wesley George added a pair of hits - one a double, and scored twice.

The winners - who built a 7-1 lead before the Spartans plated three runs in the seventh - also received two hits and an RBI from Shaun O’Donnell.

Joshua Lichman earned the victory, allowing just one run through six innings before giving up a pair in the seventh. Lichman struck out four.

Northwestern improved to 6-7 overall, and 6-5 in the league. The Spartans dropped to 10-2 and 10-1.

Lehighton-Saucon Valley

Lehighton rallied in the seventh to force extra innings, but Saucon Valley eventually pulled out a 6-5 walk-off victory.

The Panthers’ Joseph Griffith had an RBI double in the ninth inning to help his team extend its winning streak to eight games.

Austin Greene had two hits and knocked in two runs for the Indians, who had taken a 5-4 lead in the eighth before Saucon came back to win. Carter Birnbaum also finished with a pair of hits for the Tribe.

The Panthers upped their record to 9-2, while Lehighton fell to 6-6.

Easton-Pleasant Valley

An eight-run inning by Easton proved to be the difference as the Red Rovers edged Pleasant Valley, 9-8, in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference matchup.

Simeon Reed had three hits and scored twice for the winners, who trailed 5-1 before their sixth-inning explosion.

The Bears - who made things interesting with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh - were led by Nathan Loch’s three hits and three runs. PV’s Andrew Meitzler added a hit and knocked in two runs, while Nate Mostosky (double) and Jack Smale (triple) both delivered extra-base hits.

Pleasant Valley is now 9-4 overall and 6-4 in the EPC, while the Rovers improved to 9-2 and 8-2.

SOFTBALL

Lehighton-Saucon Valley

Lehighton pounded out 24 hits, including four from Makayla Scott, and rolled to a 21-4 non-league win over Saucon Valley.

Scott also scored two runs and knocked in three for the winners, who opened the game with a seven-run first inning.

Maggie Pagotto collected three hits, including a home run, scored three times and had three RBIs. Madyson Bergdahl finished with three hits and four runs, while Abbie Miller ended with three hits, two runs and a pair of RBIs. Addison Chavanic also had three hits in the lopsided win.

Others with solid games for Lehighton included Eryn Mertz (two hits, three runs, two RBIs), Amy Dwojewski (two hits, run, RBI) and Marlee Craig (two hits, run, RBI).

Lehighton improved to 4-7, while Saucon Valley is now 1-9.

Easton-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley used a five-run fifth inning, and a strong pitching performance from Kailynn Getz, to earn a 5-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Easton.

Getz went the distance, allowing just four hits, an unearned run and two walks to help the Bears improve to 4-7. She also helped her own cause with two hits, a run and an RBI.

PV also received a pair of hits from Brianca Pridham, while Lydia Borger collected a hit and two RBIs. Emilee Roberti (double) and Olivia Donner (double) both chipped in extra-base hits.

The Red Rovers fell to 4-6.

Panther Valley-LLA

An 11-run second inning powered Panther Valley to its first win of the season, defeating non-league foe Lincoln Leadership Academy (21-2) by a 21-2 score.

Brenna Beshock was solid in the circle and at the plate to lead the Panthers. Beshock allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out 11. She also collected three hits and knocked in two runs at the plate.

PV’s Mikayla Yuricheck contributed to the offensive output with three hits - one a triple - and four RBIs. Morgan O’Brien added three hits, including a double, and three RBIs, with Kaidence Krapf adding a pair of hits and an RBI.

Panther Valley is now 1-9, while Lincoln drops to 1-3.

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Palmerton clinched a district playoff berth by routing Catasauqua, 16-1, in a Colonial League contest.

Alyssa Silliman and Megan Matsko both blasted home runs for the Blue Bombers. Silliman belted a solo homer during a nine-run second inning, while Matsko - who had three hits and scored three runs - added a solo shot in the third.

Sydney Frantz added three hits, two runs and an RBI for the Bombers. Winning pitcher Carly Gaffney contributed a pair of hits and knocked in three.

The Bombers improved to 10-4 overall, and 5-4 in the league. The Roughies dropped to 3-4 and 2-4.

Tamaqua-Mahanoy Area

Tamaqua used a nine-run fourth inning to close out Mahanoy Area and claim a 15-0 non-league victory.

Bryn Clifford pitched a one-hitter and struck out 14 to compliment the Blue Raiders’ offensive output, which produced 19 hits. Clifford added to that offensive showing with three hits, one a double, and three runs.

Leah Crowley - who scored three runs and knocked in three, - finished with a single, double and triple. Addison Krall also contributed three hits and two RBIs.

Other main contributors for Tamaqua were Kaziah Streisel (two hits, two RBIs), Gabby Robb (two hits, two RBIs), Megan Lavine (two hits) and Riley MacMillan (two hits, two runs, two RBIs).

The Raiders, who have won three straight, are now 4-7. Mahanoy fell to 2-8.

TRACK

Zephyr Invite

The Jim Thorpe boys and girls combined for seven first-place finishes at the annual Zephyr Invitational.

Northwestern also posted a first place at the Invite, which featured 14 schools. Lehighton also took part in the meet.

David Richards and Laura Clarke led the way for the Olympians, as both registered a pair of individual wins. Richards captured the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.22, and cleared 6-3 to take the high jump. Clarke, meanwhile, won the discus with a throw of 111-9, and recorded a distance of 33-10 1/2 to claim the shot put event.

Kaila O’Connor added a first in the 100 with a time of 12.75, and also placed second in the 200 (25.73). Thorpe’s Katrin Cavanaugh also picked up a first in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 9-0. The other winner for the Olympians was Ryan Bailor, who ran a 4:37.96 to take the 1600.

The Northwestern win came from the boys 3200 relay team (8:20.89).

Other top-five finishers among the three area teams were:

Jim Thorpe girls – Nicole Carroll (400, 2nd; 800, 5th); Katelynn Bos (1600, 3rd); Leah Wasko (long jump, 4th; triple jump, 4th).

Lehighton girls – Brittney Bartasavage (100H, 3rd; 300H, 5th; high jump, 5th); Haley Ginder (high jump, 4th; triple jump, 3rd).

Northwestern girls – Carsyn Van Norman (100, 4th); Angelina Klein (1600, 4th); Faith Yost (300H, 2nd; high jump, 3rd); Sadie Fenstermaker (javelin, 4th; shot put, 4th).

Jim Thorpe boys – Ridge Snyder (800, 3rd); Richards (300H, 5th); 3200 relay team (3rd).

Lehighton boys – Ethan Buchert (200, 3rd).

Northwestern boys – Joshua Heilman (400, 3rd); Cole Chukoskie (1600, 3rd); Matt Santana (3200, 3rd); Gavin Nelson (high jump, 4th); Cayden Kuhns (pole vault, 2nd).

Marian at Stephen Invite

Marian took part at the Leonard Stephen Invite at Wilson West Lawn High School over the weekend.

Fatikha Tikhtova earned her squad’s only gold medal at the 23-school event. Tikhtova cleared 5-3 in the high jump to win the event.

Michael Fellin also had a strong showing, placing second in the 100. Fellin crossed the line in a time of 11.6.
