Lehighton seeks community help for park bench donation

Community activists are sought to assist Lehighton in its quest to receive a park bench made from recycled materials.

The Lehighton Downtown Partnership is collecting plastic film for a new project, according to Bambi Elsasser, Lehighton Main Street Manager.

“If we as a community collect 500 pounds of plastic film by Sept. 8, Trex will donate a park bench made from recycled materials,” Elsasser said.

Elsasser said the Trex bench will be located on the D&L Trail. She said the advantage of a Trex bench rather than wood is that it lasts much longer and is maintenance free aside from needing to be washed.

“Once this project is done (on Sept. 8) and if we’re successful, we would also like to do another collection of plastic film for a Trex bench,” she said.

Elsasser said items that are being accepted include grocery bags, bread bags, bubble wrap, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, plastic shipping envelopes, Ziplock and food storage bags, cereal bags, case overwrap, salt bags, pallet wrap and stretch film, wood pellet bags, and produce bags.

She said the recycling bin will be located at the Carbon Chamber & Economic Development Office, 137 South St., Lehighton (side porch).

Anyone with questions may call 610-509-6465 or email BambiE@carboncountychamber.org.

In an unrelated matter, Elsasser said the LDP is partnering with the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau for Pick Up the Poconos at 9 a.m. Saturday at the fountain in the Lower Park in Lehighton to pick up trash.
