Update: 6 dead in I-81 crash; 80 vehicles involved

Six people died Monday in a mass casualty crash Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County, state police reported Wednesday morning.

Identities of the victims will be released after death notifications have been made to the families.

The road reopened at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Trooper David Beohm said.

State police at the Frackville barracks said 39 commercial vehicles and 41 passenger vehicles were involved in the crash.

The northbound lane had been closed between Exit 107 and 119.

The incident occurred at 10:38 a.m. Monday, during a whiteout caused by a snow squall.

At least 24 people were injured and taken to four area hospitals.

Numerous vehicles caught on fire and those injured who were able to self-extricate and walk out were taken by buses from Schuylkill Transportation Service to the Wegman’s Distribution Center, Beohm said.

“After being triaged, they were taken to the reunification center at the Goodwill Fire Company in Minersville,” he said.

Pennsylvania State Police Forensic Services and multiple Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program units are assisting in the investigation, which remains active.
