Batting cage coming to Elmer Valo Field

A batting cage is slated to be the next addition at a Little League field in Palmerton.

On a 6-0 vote, borough council on Thursday approved a request from the Palmerton-Towamensing Little League to construct a batting cage at Elmer Valo Field.

Last month, it was announced that fencing has been restored at the field on South Third Street.

Borough Manager Donna McGarry at that time thanked both St. Luke’s University Health Network, along with Country Harvest Family Market in Palmerton.

The cost to replace the fencing was $11,200, and added the contributions from both covered the entire cost.

Formerly known as the Third Street Field, council in 2016 renamed the field as the Elmer Valo Field in honor of Valo’s long, storied professional baseball career.

Born in 1927 in Rybnik, Czechoslovakia, Valo was raised just feet from the present field.
