A Northampton County man was jailed on Wednesday charged with assaulting a 4-week-old boy, causing severe injuries to the child.

State Police at Bethlehem said Rasheen Joseph Miller, 18, of Bath, has been charged with eight counts of aggravated assault, as a felony 1, and four counts aggravated assault, as a felony 2. He has also been charged with recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and endangering the welfare of children.

According to troopers on Tuesday they were contacted by medical personnel from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia regarding severe injuries that were being treated to a 4-week-old baby.

During the investigation it was determined that on Monday the baby was taken to his primary care physician for a wellness checkup and during the checkup the doctor said the baby should be taken directly to the hospital due to severe injuries.

The baby was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, Fountain Hill, and because of the severity of his injuries, was flown by medical helicopter to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

A further investigation revealed that Miller, the child’s father, had intentionally dropped the child from his arms and onto the floor, intentionally dropped the infant down a flight of stairs and struck his head against a wall on multiple occasions.

Miller was arraigned before a district judge and committed to the county prison in Easton, unable to post $100,000 straight cash bail. Miller is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing in April 4 before District Judge John C. Capobianco of Nazareth.
