Details updated in Monroe double fatal crash

The Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department has released additional details of a crash that happened at 6:52 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of State Route 611 and Main Street in Tobyhanna, claiming the lives of two people, ages 12 and 20.

Killed in the crash were Victor Liriano, 20, and Christian A. Leon, 12, both of Tobyhanna.

Police said the crash happened when a Hyundai Kona operated by Jovany Briceno, 18, of Tobyhanna, was traveling north on Route 611 when for undetermined reasons it crossed the center line, traveled into the southbound lane and collided with a 2022 International tractor trailer operated by Martin Tyther, 56, of Collegeville.

Police said the impact of the crash resulted in the Hyundai being torn in half, with Liriano being ejected and Leon and a 17-year-old female, also from Tobyhanna, being trapped in the rear seat of the vehicle. Police said the female and Leon are siblings.

The 17-year-old remains in the intensive care unit of a regional hospital while Briceno has been released from the hospital, police said. Tyther was not injured in the collision.

Police said at the time of the crash, the area was experiencing heavy rain that caused drivers to have limited visibility.
