A building believed to be built in the mid-1800s was ravaged by fire early today in Lower Towamensing Township. The owner, who lives in the structure, was reportedly overcome and transferred to the Palmerton Hospital.

The fire happened at the former Aquashicola Post Office located off Forest Inn Road in Aquashicola, requiring three area fire companies about two hours to bring it under control.

The building is owned by Bill Switzgable, who was outside the dwelling when firefighters arrived. It served as the village post office until a new facility was built more than two decades ago about a block away.
