Lehighton looks into upgrades for stage lighting

Upgrades could be in the works for Lehighton Area High School’s auditorium stage lighting system.

The district received a proposal from Generations Services, a New Jersey company specializing in LED lighting for commercial and industrial operations, to troubleshoot stage lighting at LAHS. The company would prepare a comprehensive report detailing its findings, recommended upgrades, and a system upgrade quote.

According to the proposal on the table, the diagnosis and report would cost the district $3,130, which covers the work and travel time for the company.

Lehighton looked into the issue after Laurel Zimmerman, a district teacher and its new drama club adviser, spoke at a Feb. 21 board meeting regarding the problems.

“The light board doesn’t work and it’s really a detriment to us as a district because we could be renting out our facility to other groups in addition to our students using it,” Zimmerman told the board. “Drama club, like many other extracurricular activities, is trying to bring students back and get more participation after COVID-19 and we’re just not able to do a lot of the things we would really like to do because of some of the issues.”

Acting Superintendent Jack Corby said during a board workshop Monday night that contracting with Generations Services would give the district an idea of what needs to be done to correct any problems.

“I think this is something we need to really look at, especially since we never heard of any problems before they were brought up at that meeting,” Director Barbara Bowes said. “If we don’t know what is wrong, we can’t fix it. Whether we can afford to do everything this year, that is another question, but at least we’ll know what we’re looking at.”

Before that happens, however, Lehighton may look elsewhere to ensure it’s getting the best bang for the buck.

“That amount is not a drop in the bucket just to look at a system,” Director Brian Shaner said. “I’d like to see us get a couple more prices.”

Lehighton’s next board meeting is March 28 at 7 p.m.
