Carbon County court
An Easton man was sentenced in Carbon County court on Friday to time-served on charges stemming from break-ins in Lansford.He was one of five defendants in pending cases to appear for sentencing before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II. All previously entered guilty pleas.
Burglary counts
Nicholas Thomas Reyda, 43, was sentenced on two counts of criminal trespass and one count of simple assault. In exchange for his prior pleas two counts of felony 1 burglary are being dropped in a plea deal with the district attorney’s office. He entered a plea Friday to the assault count.
Reyda was charged with entering two residences along East Bertsch Street on Nov. 6, 2018. The assault charge was filed on Aug. 6, 2016, by Lansford police who responded to a disturbance at a residence along Patterson Street. Reyda was charged with assaulting his then girlfriend.
On trespass charges he was sentenced to time-served (19 days) to one day less 24 months.
On the assault count he was placed on probation for a year, consecutive to the trespass charges.
He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, have no contact with the female in the assault case and prohibited from possessing any firearms.
Other cases
Nina Renee Hofstetter, 40, of Easton, was sentenced to serve three to one day less 24 months in the county prison on a charge of theft. The prison term will be followed by three years of probation. She was charged with taking money from her mother. The mother gave her permission to pay bills for her but the defendant used funds for herself.
She was also ordered to make restitution of $1,833.59, get drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment and supply a DNA sample.
She will begin serving the prison term at 7 p.m. on March 18 and serve it on consecutive two-day weekends.
Nathan Michael Miller, 21, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 90 days to five years in the county prison on a driving under the influence of a controlled substance charge. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months and supply a DNA sample. On a driving under suspension charge he was fined $200 and costs. The sentences run concurrent with a probation period he is serving. He was given credit for 43 days already served.
He was arrested on July 24, 2020, by Lehighton police along East Bridge Street for DUI of a controlled substance.
He is currently an inmate in the county prison.
Troy Allen Refsnider, 50, of Rehrersburg, Berks County, was sentenced in three cases to charges of DUI, false alarms to agency of public safety and possession of drug paraphernalia.
On the DUI charge he was sentenced to serve one to seven years, pay a fine of $2,500 and his license was suspended for 18 months. On the false alarms count he was sentenced to the same term, concurrent to each other. On the drug count he was placed on probation for a year, concurrent with the other counts. He was also ordered to supply a DNA sample.
He was arrested on Sept. 11, 2019, by Nesquehoning police along Market Street for DUI of a controlled substance. He was arrested on the false alarms charge on April 7, 2020, by Nesquehoning police when he called in a fake emergency call for an incident along East Garibaldi Avenue. The drug count occurred on Sept. 5, 2019, at his residence filed by Nesquehoning police. A charge of possession of a controlled substance was dropped in a plea deal.
He is currently enrolled in an inpatient drug program. Nanovic said he must continue in the program and successfully complete it. If he does he will get full credit for the time spent in the program, which would satisfy his minimum prison term. If he fails to complete it, he will have to serve the full year in prison.
Beth A. Hosier, 36, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 90 days to five years in the county prison on a DUI charge. She was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months and supply a DNA sample. She was arrested on May 17, 2017, by Lehighton police along Route 443 for DUI of a controlled substance.
She will begin the jail term at 8 p.m. on March 11 and was given credit for 58 days already served. She has 32 more days to serve.
Each defendant must also pay court costs of over $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.
