Jim Thorpe seniors Ella Farnell and Max Allaham won Students of the Year in the 2022 competition sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Going against 18 other Lehigh Valley teams consisting of 33 students, Farnell and Allaham raised $67,943 in just seven weeks. They surpassed their goal of $50,000 and received the Students of the Year Volunteerism Award with a $5,000 bonus.
They are naming a research grant in memory of Hunter Wolfe, a childhood friend who lost his battle to acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of 12.
The runner-up raised over $45,000. The overall total of all the campaign class was $344,697, the most ever raised in any of the campaign classes.
The Student of the Year contest began on Jan. 7 and ended Feb. 26.
Farnell’s involvement in the competition is driven by personal experience.
“I grew up together with Hunter and his sister, Olivia, and we were best friends,” she said. “Max and I are doing this for him and also to honor Damian Richards, a Jim Thorpe resident and a cancer survivor.”
Richards’ brother David and Olivia Wolfe won Students of the Year in 2019 by raising $52,000 in the seven-week period.
