Carbon woman sent to state prison on assault charge

A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a state prison term on Tuesday in the county court on a charge of simple assault.

Lori Bobarsky, 55, of Palmerton, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve one to two years in a state correctional institution.

She was charged for an incident on Aug. 3, 2021, at a residence along Anthony Lane in Lower Towamensing Township. State police at Lehighton were dispatched to the home for a report of an assault.

On scene, Bobarsky was found at the residence covered in blood, but the blood was not hers but her in-live boyfriend’s. Troopers said their investigation determined that Bobarsky struck her boyfriend on the head with a hammer, causing a severe laceration and profuse bleeding. He was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Defense attorney Eric Wiltrout, of the public defender’s office, said his client suffers from mental health issues. He said Bobarsky and the victim are still living together. He added, “He drove her to court today.”

Bobarsky apologized for her actions and said she got involved in drugs in her 30s.

Matika noted Bobarsky has a long criminal record including many drug convictions and arrests. He also said she was not amenable to supervision in the county prison any more. He said she has been placed on probation 17 times and revoked eight times for violating conditions.

Matika also said he was imposing the deadly weapon enhancement in deciding on a sentence. Without the enhancement the sentencing range, at the low end, is 6 to 12 months in prison, with the enhancement, one to two years.

Matika also ordered her to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, supply a DNA sample, render 50 hours of community service when paroled and pay court costs of over $1,000.

She was given credit for 38 days already served and began the prison term immediately.
