A place for pet owners

Cynthia Beers, of Kresgeville, known to most neighbors as Missy, always had in the back of her mind to open a pet supply store someday.

“I was a nurse for many years, but I love dogs and cats and always pets in my home. I planned to open a pet supply store eventually, but not as quickly as I did,” she said.

Troy, her retired husband, had just started to build a gun shop onto their house when he became ill and was unable to finish the shop before he died in March 2020.

“It was hard and I didn’t do much but watch Netflix. My dogs are what kept me going,” she said.

Slowly her life became somewhat normal, but then the pandemic began and Beers began finding it difficult to find dog food supplies for her dogs.

“You might be able to find your brand in the grocery store or a farm store, but it is sort of hit-and-miss,” Beers said.

“It was getting harder to get things for dogs and to go places to buy pet supplies, she said and added, “This area has no real pet food stores.”

Not long after realizing the area had no actual pet food supply places, Beers walked into the unfinished gun shop and an idea popped into her head. She could do the work that needed to be done to finish the shop and open a pet supply store.

The resourceful retired nurse, with the help of YouTube and lots of determination, learned how to do carpentry, hang doors, finish the walls, and how to do all the things that needed to be done to make a pet supply store.

Next she began calling vendors to secure the best prices and best food. In August 2021, Beers opened We “R” Wild LLC.

One thing as the owner Beers firmly believes that just because your pet’s food comes in a big shiny, colorful bag, with a high price, doesn’t mean it is the healthiest food for your pet. What matters are the ingredients in the food.

“In fact, I try to order the dog food in what they call breeders’ bags to keep the cost less, especially if the customer is buying in bulk,” she said.

The breeders’ bags are name brand foods but they don’t come in the fancy, colorful bags that you see in the pet store or on your grocery store shelves. The dog food is packaged in plain heavy packing with just the name of the food and weight of the bag. Dog breeders don’t care about the fancy packaging and it keeps the cost down, especially since colored ink and artwork add to the price.

“I try to carry good pet food that isn’t going to break the owner. Today so many families struggle to make ends meet and they should be able to at least buy pet food that is nutritious as well as affordable,” Beers said.

The store carries the following pet foods: dog, cat, rabbit, hamster, guinea pig, rat, gerbil, and mini pig.

The store also has a large section of toys, collars, grooming tools, crates and many other items pet owners need.

“The best thing to do is to log on to my website: https://www.werwildllc.com/ and you can see photos of everything I carry in the store, plus a list of pet foods the store carries,” she said.

One thing Beers

is excited about is that starting in mid-March, as a community service, she has a veterinarian who will do low-cost vet/vaccine clinics. She is still working out the details of when and how often the clinics will be.

“The veterinarian will provide me with the price sheet and I will post them on my website as soon as they are available. It is just another way of trying to help. I don’t make any money on it.”
