Blue Ridge Fire Hook and Ladder Company and West End Fire Company responded to a chimney fire at a home on Brick Church Road Friday morning.

The residents, Sonny and Beverly Weidlich, managed to get safely out of the home, but they weren’t sure what happened to their six cats or where they had scattered to.

“We noticed smoke coming up from the floor before the smoke alarms went off,” said Beverly Weidlich.

She was surprised it was a chimney fire because they just had their chimney relined last year.

“We burn a wood stove and used it for 50 years with no problems, but we thought maybe we should get a liner in the chimney and now look happened when we did,” she said.
