Weissport sees problems with new garage

Weissport Borough has been working on building two garages at the corner of Allen and Lime streets, a project that has seen its share of difficulties. The concrete pads had been installed and COVID-19 shortages on labor caused the installation of the garage to be delayed. The garages were finally built, but there are problems with them already.

“Unfortunately, these two garages we had put up; neither one of them are big enough to get our equipment in them,” Moyer said.

“They made them shorter than what were supposed to be by about a foot,” added Councilman Tom Ketchledge. “They were supposed to be 26 by 26, but they ended up shorter. The trucks barely fit in them, but not with the plows or salt spreaders attached to them.”

Another problem is that the garage doors have not yet been installed. They were having difficulty contacting the company to get the work done that has already been paid for. The garages were from Choice Metal Buildings, with Carolina Garage Doors working as a subcontractor.

“They put the rails on, and they went to hang the garage doors, and they needed extra inch and a half of clearance to the roof,” Ketchledge explained. “Instead of making adjustments to the track and putting the doors on, they just said ‘they don’t fit’ and never put them up. But they didn’t leave us any hardware, or we would put them up ourselves.”

Councilman Joe Foster said he would try to contact Carolina Garage Doors to find out when they can get the garage doors installed so the borough can begin using them. They can’t begin moving items into them until they can get the doors installed so the items they store in them can be locked.

Potholes

The Weissport Borough plans to patch some potholes within the borough near the Weissport Park.

“We’re starting to get some big potholes back there on Franklin and Park Streets,” Council President Arland Moyer indicated.

Moyer will be purchasing some blacktop to begin filling in the potholes.

Weisstock

Last year’s Weisstock celebration was a big success, so the second annual Weisstock will be held in the borough park on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3, from 5 to 9 p.m.; and Sept. 4, from noon to 9 p.m. This year is expected to have a bigger event over two days and will feature more kids rides, food, vendors and entertainment.

Last year St. Peter’s Community Resource Center hosted Weisstock to help pay for a new roof. This year, St. Peter’s and the Weissport Event Committee will co-host the event, with St. Peter’s receiving some of the proceeds for a new furnace, and the Weissport Event Committee receiving some of the money.

Tax collector

Weissport tax collector reports no taxes have been collected yet for 2022. Garbage money collected for January is $2,441.90.
