Hometown Heroes Project expands to more towns

Schuylkill Township’s secretary Denise Hill has an upcoming meeting to learn more about the Hometown Hero flags project so the township can effectively start to do it in places like Mary D, Tuscarora and Brockton that don’t currently have the option.

Hometown Heroes refers to the longtime project that has already been implemented in towns such as Tamaqua, Coaldale and Lansford that allows families to honor their loved ones by putting up pictures of family members that served in the military on telephone poles near their homes.

Questions at the meeting from township residents regarded the availability of replacement flags due to sun damage.

“It’s up to the families that buy them,” Vice Chairman Gary Feathers said.

Others wanted to know about how the flags are preserved in the winter months.

Hill added that she’ll be attending a meeting soon to find out more about how other townships are going about doing it, but as Feathers noted, it is up to the families that buy them to purchase a new one if theirs gets faded over time.

More information needs to be gathered before the township implements the project in their area. The chairmen also said they are in the process of getting authorization from PPL to use the telephone poles for the project.

Maintenance worker Mark Buccieri said the town will also need to look at the actual demand for flags before knowing exactly how implementing the project will go.
