Carbon County court
A Carbon County man was placed in Carbon County’s house arrest program on Tuesday after previously pleading guilty to driving under the influence.
Trent Allen Sterling, 25, of Lansford, was placed in the Restrictive Conditions of Probation program for two years with the first 62 days on electronic monitoring. He was also sentenced to serve 28 days in prison, but given credit for 28 days spent in an inpatient rehabilitation program and parole.
He was further ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months and render 75 hours of community service.
He arrested on Dec. 31, 2020, by state police at Lehighton along Route 443 in Mahoning Township, for DUI of a controlled substance.
Resentenced
Thomas David Place, 35, of Alexandria, Virginia, was resentenced on a charge of indecent assault.
He was sentenced on Oct. 12, 2021, by Matika on the charge but that sentence had to be vacated due to a problem transferring his supervision to his home state of Virginia.
Because Virginia has not acted on the matter and due to a state cooperative program and the nature of the charge, the transfer is in limbo. Place must reside in Pennsylvania to serve his sentence unless Virginia accepts the transfer of supervision. Defense attorney John Waldron, of Allentown, said he and the county probation office have been working on the problem, but admitted it has been a very slow process. In the meantime, Place has been living in Carbon County.
Matika resentenced him to serve one year probation, render 50 hours of community service, follow all provisions of Megan’s Law, and have no contact with the victim.
He must also register for the next 15 years as a sexual offender.
Place was charge for an incident on June 28, 2020, at the Woods Campground near Lehighton.
State police said that an employee of a cable company was at the campground installing cable service at a cabin where Place was staying when the defendant made sexual advances toward the victim.
Each defendant must also pay court costs of over $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation.
