A cat kennel is proposed for 209 W.Broad St. in Tamaqua.
Ronald Chamberlain, of Walnutport, is requesting the special permitted use. The property was formerly The Dog Haus, which sold hot dogs and other food items. It is zoned general commercial.
The zoning hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the borough building, 320 E. Broad St. The five-member board has 45 days to issue a written opinion.
Thomas Nelson, borough zoning officer, said Chamberlain is seeking a kennel because regulations permit five animals in a property. He is requesting approval for up to 12.
The name of the business is Coal Cats Cafe.
Chamberlain was not reachable for comment.
Nelson said Chamberlain is going to work with Hillside SPCA that will provide financial support for medical care. A phone call to the shelter went to voicemail.
The cats will be fostered and available for adoption. Chamberlain and others will be responsible for the feeding and shelter of the cats, Nelson said.
The borough Historical Architectural Review Board had a meeting Jan. 10 to recommend approval for the changes to the facade and signage. Council approved a certificate of appropriateness at its Jan. 18 meeting, fire chief Jim Connely said. An application for a health license is also need for the proposed use, Connely said.
