Pocono Garden Club to host luncheon on Feb. 8

A popular recent internet meme features cartoon characters pondering what the new year will bring.

One insists confidently, “it will bring flowers.” Another asks how they know that. The first replies, “because I’m planting flower seeds.”

Members of the Pocono Garden Club will put that spirit into action when they meet on Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Monroe County Conservation District, 8050 Running Valley Road, Bartonsville for a potluck luncheon and a hands-on lesson in starting flower or vegetable seeds.

The first meeting of the year is traditionally a covered dish luncheon, and members should bring a favorite dish with serving utensils and a place setting.

Club members and guests also should bring clean, empty egg cartons and flower or vegetable seeds of their choice. The planting medium and instructions will be provided.

Longtime club member Dolores Ragin will lead the program on gardening tips and starting seeds indoors now so they are ready to replant outdoors when the time is right.

Participation is encouraged in the monthly design exhibit, titled My Funny Valentine.

A vertical design, the arrangement should feature colors of red and pink. Fresh flowers are preferred, though silk and dried flowers are acceptable. Accessories are permitted.

The horticultural entry would be a broadleaf or needle stem (boxwood, Laurel, pine, spruce) not to exceed 16 inches in a clear container.

Please bring in your entries 30 minutes before the start of the meeting.

Everyone interested in gardening is welcome. Masks are required.

Membership is $15 a year.
