Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 20

The Palmerton and Northwestern girls both extended their winning streaks with victories on Thursday.

The Blue Bombers defeated Catasauqua for their 14th consecutive win, while the Tigers topped Salisbury for their ninth straight victory.

Other winners included the Jim Thorpe and Palmerton boys.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Palmerton continued its undefeated season with a convincing 52-27 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Bethie Morgain scored a game-high 16 points for the Blue Bombers, who led by 25 at halftime.

Raegen Nemeth and Brianna Moore both finished with 11 points for Palmerton, who have won nine games by 20-or-more points this season.

The Rough Riders were paced by Sophia Beckel’s 10 points.

The win lifted the Bombers to 14-0 overall, and 13-0 in the league. Catty fell to 3-11, and 3-9.

Northwestern-Salisbury

A big second quarter helped propel Northwestern to a 50-15 Colonial League victory over Salisbury.

Tied at 9-9 after the first period, Cara Thomas tallied nine of her 14 points in the second stanza as the Tigers used a 25-2 frame to put the game out of reach.

Paige Sevrain also scored 14 points, including six in that second quarter, for the winners. Rachel Dorney chipped in with seven for Northwestern, whose winning streak reached nine game.

The Falcons received a team-high seven points from Ava Smarch.

The Tigers are now 14-3 overall, and 12-1 in the league, while Salisbury dropped to 3-13, and 2-11.

BOYS BASKETBALL

R. Clemente-Jim Thorpe

Kaiden Herron scored a game-high 19 points to help power Jim Thorpe to a 58-48 non-league victory over Roberto Clemente Charter School.

The Olympians (8-6) outscored their opponent by an 11-1 margin in the second quarter to take control of the game.

Derryl Fisher contributed 14 points to the winning effort, while Colby McHugh chipped in with eight.

The Raptors (6-5) received a team-high 14 points from Christian Ceballos.

Catasauqua-Palmerton

Palmerton rebounded from a slow start and eventually cruised to a 65-37 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

The Blue Bombers trailed by four points after the first quarter against the winless Rough Riders, but outscored the visitors 21-5 in the second frame to take the lead.

Matt Machalik talled six of his game-high 18 points during the second period, while Brayden Hosier contributed 12. In all, 11 Palmerton players scored in the contest. David Tworkowski chipped in with eight points, and Kendall Robinson added seven.

For Catasauqua, Matt Fotta posted a team-high eight points.

The Bombers upped their record to 12-4 overall, and 9-4 in the league. The Roughies dropped to 0-12, and 0-11.

Lincoln LA-Weatherly

A strong finish by Lincoln Leadership Academy allowed the Lions to pull away from Weatherly for a 77-55 non-league victory.

The Wreckers pulled within three points, 48-45, during the third quarter, but Lincoln Leadership closed the game on a 29-10 run.

Noah Mitchell scored a game-high 33 points for the winners, who improved to 7-5.

For the Wreckers, now 1-7, Frankie Willis posted a team-high 17 points. Ian McLaurin added 15 points, while Timmy Maguschak followed with 10.

Panther Valley-Nativity

Nativity posted a 44-36 victory over Panther Valley.

Connor Penberth led the Panthers with 12 points, while Logan Fisher added nine.

The winners received 12 points from Noah Dolbin.
